What is a jabber?

Jabber (XMPP) is an open source protocol, which was created mainly in order to support IM (instant messaging). Compared to probably more known ICQ, jabber is an open protocol, so it doesn't depend on single company, its end user agreenments and accessibility of their servers. Another advantage is the possibility transports, through which you can use your jabber account to communicate with users of other IM protocols.

More information you can find here, comparison of the available clients you can find here

How can I communicate with users of other IM protocols?

Currently supported transports are icq and irc.

At this moment, two transport for ICQ protocol are available, please use the Spectrum ICQ transport (, because PyICQt ( is deprecated and migration to only Spectrum ICQ transport is about to happen, soon.

Unrecognized server certificate error while trying to connect

If your client software is unable to verify a certificate of our servers (not the same as the certificate change error!), verify that you have certificate of Terena organisation between trusted ones for your client (if not, you can download it here).
